  Museum of Communism

The exhibition explores the complex story of communism and freedom in Czechoslovakia from  February 1948 to the Velvet Revolution in 1989. Through powerful objects, videos and 62 panels divided into thematic sections, visitors learn about different aspects of life, including daily life, politics, history, sports, economics, education, art, propaganda in the media, the army, the secret police and censorship.  They can explore historical, political, cultural and economic legacies of the communist rule.

Conveniently located close to the Republic square in V Celnici street, the total area of 1,500 m2 features interestingly designed spaces, where visitors can walk through mock-ups of a shock worker’s workshop,  a school classroom, a child’s bedroom,  or an interrogation room. The museum boasts a vast collection of short videos, posters, and artifacts illustrating what everyday life under communism was like. Highlights include a noose borrowed from the Pankrac prison or gallows used to hang prisoners.

At the cinema, visitors can watch at regular intervals (every 20 minutes) a documentary film „A Time of Shame, Silence, and Hope“  that takes you through the period from 1969 to 1989 and brings to life the stories of general public, victims and survivors.  Families with children can benefit from the discounted family admission and worksheets for kids.

One of the Prague’s most incredible museums, housing an inspiring collection of exhibits and depicting 41 years of communist regime in the Czechoslovakia, is open 364 days a year from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.  The exhibition emphasizes that the actions of people, demanding freedom and resisting the destructive ideology, can transform the nation.
