Das Filmfest – 20 Years of German-Language Cinema in Prague
15–20 October 2026
Lucerna Cinema & Edison Filmhub, Prague

Das Filmfest celebrates its 20th anniversary this October with around 30 acclaimed films from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Since 2006, the festival has brought some of the most exciting contemporary German-language cinema to Czech audiences, from award-winning dramas and documentaries to unconventional comedies, thrillers and remarkable debuts. Many of the films would otherwise rarely reach Czech cinemas, while selected screenings offer the opportunity to meet filmmakers and other guests in person. All films are presented in their original language with Czech subtitles.

To mark its anniversary, Das Filmfest also looks back at two landmarks of cinema. On 18 October, Kino Světozor will screen the Oscar-winning The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen), the very first film shown by the festival twenty years ago. On 19 October, the more than century-old expressionist masterpiece The Golem: How He Came into the World (Der Golem, wie er in die Welt kam) will be screened in the Church of St Salvator with an extraordinary live performance by the 30-member St. Nikolai Choir from Hamburg.

The wider programme features some of the most talked-about recent German-language films alongside documentaries, restored classics and films for younger audiences. Whether you already follow German, Austrian and Swiss cinema or simply want to discover films beyond the usual theatrical releases, Das Filmfest offers a week of distinctive European cinema and encounters with the people behind it.
