Dating back to 1475, Powder Tower (Prašná brána) is one of the oldest gothic city gates and an entrance to the Old Town. It is 65 meters high and the staircare, which leads to the gallery, has 186 steps. For nearly 400 years coronation processions of Bohemian monarchs passed through the Powder Tower on their way to St. Vitus Cathedral, where they were crowned.
The tower started the “Royal Road”, which lead through the Old Town over the Charles Bridge to the Prague Castle. The gate assumed its current name in the 17th century, when it was used as a gunpowder storage facility. Nowadays the tower is open to public and offers exhibitions and splendid panoramic views of the city.
